Cairo Station with John Maguire

We're introducing a World Cinema segment to Still Voices this year. Looking at films we feel may be underappreciated, starting with Youseff Chahine's 1958 masterpiece Cairo Station on Aug 18th at 3:30pm. This will be followed by a discussion on Chahine and the film with film critic John Maguire @instamaguire. Tickets €10, on sale July 23rd exclusively from our website!!!

Cairo Station - Kinawi, a physically challenged peddler who makes his living selling newspapers in the central Cairo train station, is obsessed by Hannouma, an attractive young woman who sells drinks. While she treats Kinawi in a sympathetic way and jokes with him about a possible relationship, She is actually in love with Abu Sri’, a strong and respected porter at the station who is struggling to unionize his fellow workers to combat their boss’ exploitative and abusive treatment.

John Maguire is a film critic, journalist and broadcaster who writes a weekly column for the Sunday Business Post newspaper. John was a founding member of the Dublin Film Critics Circle in 2001. Married with two young children, he lives in Dublin.
